Lake County struggles despite penalty-striken Harlequins Print E-mail

The Lake County Gladiators arrived low in numbers but full of intensity. They were looking for revenge following a 20-11 barn burner in the spring and hoping to make their mark in their first season in Division 2.

The Harlequins scored first with a try by Dom Singleton and conversion by Dom Kasten. However, following a series of penalties by the Harlequins, the Gladiators penetrated our half and closed the score to 7-3 with a converted penalty. The Harlequins went through the rest of the half on a tear, scoring at approximately 5-minute intervals ending with a 42-3 lead.

Complacency crept into the match at the start of the 2nd half and the Gladiators stole ball and scored an unconverted try, bringing the score to 42-8. Lake County continued to pressure and contain the Harlequins until conversion specialist and center Dom Kasten broke the deadlock with 25 minutes left in the match. Kasten converted his own try bringing the score to 49-8. That was enough of a wakeup call as your Harlequins regrouped to score another 31 unanswered points. The final whistle blew early with a 80-8 final.

Although the Harlequins struggled all match to avoid the referees whistle, the 80-8 win is a record score and point differential against a Lake County team missing nearly 20 players due to retirement and injury. Despite the score, the Gladiators played with a lot of heart and even added players for the B-side match to give our club a full run. In addition, the visitors had excellent set-piece skills throughout the match but showed difficulty in containing the Harlequins on defense, particularly in loose play.

The Harlequins now start preparations for their away-match on against Lincoln Park on 4-Oct.
