Following an historic match, It is always a concern that the triumphant team would drop it down a notch. The Lions did their best to bring up the strongest team they could and we thank them for honoring the engagement. However, the outcome of the game was sealed shortly after the opening whistle. How this was accomplished though is the question of the day.

The team maintained a disciplined approach and kept a good level of communication resulting in frequent scoring. The opportunity to relax was always available, but the team kept focusing on playing as a unit. At half-time, people were aware of missed options and mistakes that could cost us the championships in South Carolina next week. The second half saw the team re-steel their focus on unit play. The final 20 minutes were spent on maintaining possession and looking to slow play down and retain possession to increase the number of consecutive phases.

We also recognized areas the we need to improve our focus and intensity. I was happy with the performance from a number of players that showed they are deserving of more time on the field for our senior side. This sort of competition for positions greatly expands our depth will be critical success as a competitive division I club.

Madison was happy to come out and attack our development side for the second match. We have a group of players who are consistently at training and are learning the game at an accelerated pace. This weekend they were paired with some of our experienced club players and faced their toughest challenge to date. Although Madison brought only 16 players and then borrowed some players from the lions, they exhibited a great brand of rugby and gave no quarter to our development side. This was an excellent learning opportunity that I am sure will bear fruit, perhaps as early as next week in the CARFU play offs.
