Local Collegiate Programs Well Represented in State Select Side Print E-mail
Written by Jim Harings
Wednesday, 31 March 2010

The Milwaukee area collegiate programs were well represented in the State select side announced today. 11 of the 26 man roster were  from the Milwaukee area programs. Marquette University  will be represented by the largest contingent, having four players selected. The team will represent the state in the Midwest LAU Collegiate Championship this spring.

With the inclusion of the players selected from UW-Whitewater, the south eastern area provided over half the players for the select side.  This demonstrates the quality of the local area  programs.

The Milwaukee Harlequins would like to  extend our congratulations to all the players selected and to the Coaching staff at each of the programs. The style and level of talent demonstrated by all the local players who were at the try outs on Sundays was impressive.

As the coach of the Milwaukee Harlequins I would like to extend an offer to all the programs;

You  are all welcome to the Harlequins trainings this spring and also  in our newly developed Sevens program this summer.

 Held every year during Summerfest, the Lakefront 7s tournament highlights the seven-a-side variation of rugby that is currently being considered for inclusion in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Rugby is often compared to American football, but the seven-a-side variation is truly unique with tournament matches consisting of about 20 minutes. This fast-paced style of rugby is exhilarating to watch as it has all the physicality of football but the and continuos play and quick, exciting scoring that is more akin to basketball.

Milwaukee team to represent the Midwest in USA Rugby National playoffsThe Harlequins travelled to Grand Rapids, MI over the weekend to play cross town rivals the Milwaukee Black & White in the Midwest semifinals. On a day affected by rain and long delays due to lightning, the Milwaukee Harlequins defeated the Black & White 27-16. The game was a tight contest with the Harlequin forwards proving to be too strong (full match report).

Due to the weather, the Midwest final between the Harlequins and the Indianapolis Impalas was unable to be played and the teams were named co-champions. Both teams will now represent the Midwest Rugby Union in the men’s division 2 national championships.
